Once again, Roumieu-Lacoste shows off its incredible consistency with another delicious new vintage of the Sauternes, showing the same lovely apricot, stone fruit, roasted nuts and honey notes for which this wine has come to be known. This lovely Sauternes from is 100% Semillon and 200% delicious! Hervé Dubourdieu is a meticulous craftsman and a supremely focused winemaker. His cellar is spotless and his 45 year old vineyards are maintained to his painstakingly diligent specifications. For his Sauternes production he only hires the best harvest crew and pays them double the going rate so he can ensure the Semillon grapes they pick will only contain noble rot (the good kind) and not deleterious rot (the bad kind.) The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged for a minimum of 16 months in 50% new and 50% one year use French oak barrels. The resulting wine is classic Sauternes with deep honey notes and apricot and peach flavors at just the appropriate sweetness levels without being too heavy or dense. And at $24 for a half bottle you don't have to wait for a special occasion to enjoy. Try it as an aperitif as the French do, to stimulate your palate before a Thursday night dinner.
